Rukuriri Tea Factory is pleased to report on the successful introduction of the subsidized Hass avocado seedlings programme that was launched in March 2026 for the benefit of our farmers.
The initiative was introduced as part of the factory’s continued commitment to improving farmer livelihoods through agricultural diversification and economic empowerment. Under the programme, farmers were able to purchase certified Hass avocado seedlings at a subsidized price of Ksh 50 per seedling, a significantly lower rate compared to prices previously offered by other feeders and suppliers.
Since the launch of the programme, many farmers embraced the opportunity by purchasing and planting the seedlings within their farms. The positive response demonstrated the farmers’ growing interest in alternative income-generating crops alongside tea farming.
The factory notes that the programme has continued to create awareness among farmers on the importance of crop diversification and long-term investment in high-value horticultural crops such as Hass avocados. The trees are expected to provide farmers with an additional and sustainable source of income once they mature and begin production.
Achievements of the Programme from Rukuriri has;
-Increased farmer access to affordable and quality Hass avocado seedlings.
-Enhanced awareness on diversified farming practices among tea farmers.
-Encouraged long-term income sustainability at household level.
-Strengthened the relationship between the factory and its farmers through direct support initiatives.
-Promoted improved land utilization and environmental sustainability.
Expected Benefits to Farmers;
The factory expects farmers who planted the seedlings to benefit through:
-Increased household income from avocado sales.
-Reduced dependency on tea as the sole source of income.
-Improved financial stability and resilience against market fluctuations.
-Better utilization of farm space through mixed farming practices.
